Two Lives Lost. How Many More Before We Act?
Heavy rains in Hyderabad have once again exposed a painful reality.
On June 9, two citizens, including a 15-year-old boy, reportedly lost their lives due to electrocution in Bandlaguda.
A young life was cut short.
A family was devastated.
A community was left asking the same question that returns every monsoon.
Why does this keep happening?
Every year, citizens are advised to stay safe.
Every year, roads are flooded.
Every year, electric hazards emerge.
Every year, traffic comes to a standstill.
Every year, families fear stepping outside during heavy rains.
And every year, tragedies remind us that the cost of poor planning is measured not only in money, but in human lives.
The question is not whether it rained.
The question is:
Were we prepared?
Who is responsible for ensuring public safety during the monsoon?
Who is responsible for identifying dangerous electrical hazards?
Who is responsible for flood management?
Who is responsible for maintaining roads, drains, and public infrastructure?
Most importantly...
How long will citizens continue to face the same risks year after year?
India has some of the world's brightest engineers, planners, and technology experts.
Surely, in the 21st century, citizens should be able to travel safely during rainfall without fear of electrocution, flooding, open drains, damaged roads, or waterlogged streets.
A modern city is not judged only by its buildings.
A modern city is judged by how safely its citizens can live, work, travel, and return home during difficult conditions.
Every life matters.
Every citizen matters.
Every preventable death demands accountability and action.
This is not about politics.
This is about public safety.
This is about responsibility.
This is about ensuring that no family has to suffer such a loss again.
UBDP Asks:
When will every citizen be able to travel safely, even during heavy rains?
How can Hyderabad and cities across Bharat become safer, smarter, and better prepared for the future?
